Drug Dealers And Death Sentence in indonesian country
Indonesia is facing a serious threat
of drug abuse which permeates all levels of society. There have been hundred
thousands of parents who lost their children's future or even their children's
lives due to drug abuse. Countless crimes have been committed by addicted
people who needed to obtain drugs to satisfy their addiction. A report by the
Chief of the Indonesia's National Narcotics Agency (BNN) stated that the number
of drug abusers in Indonesia was 4.2 million or 2.2 percent of the population
of the country in 2011. In a four-year period (2010 to 2014) 108,107
drug-related criminal cases involving 134,117 suspects were disclosed. There
were 40 cases of drug-related money-laundering crimes. Now comes the new
government that wants to implement harsh punitive sanctions on drug offenders.
Six drug dealers have just been executed in front of firing squad. The new
government seems to be serious in combating drug abuse and drug dealers by
seriously implementing death penalty to those drug dealers who are in
possession of more than 5 gram of drugs of heroin type.
The executions of the criminals were
carried out despite diplomatic calls for clemency from the countries where they
originated. Two of the countries which appealed for clemency, namely the
Netherlands and Brazil, had recalled their ambassadors in protest at the
sentences. The question is: "Should Indonesia listen to the appeals for
clemency for the people who were slowly destroying the young generation of the
country? The answer to the question is surely "No!". As indicated by
the statement from Indonesian officials that said that the executions would
protect their nation from drugs.
Another question is worth being
asked with regard to the position of the Amnesty International which calls the
firing squad killings a 'retrograde step'. What is the basis of their mercy on
these dangerous criminals? Have they ever considered what happened to million
innocent young generations of Indonesia who were made addicted to drugs by
these criminals? What type of mercy do they offer Indonesia? Do they want to
say: "Please forgive these criminals although they have poisoned and
killed your children." Is this the message they want to deliver? Shame on
them for not understanding the true nature of the problem.
